Well, NO! If the label says its 100% healthy that’s pure labelling, it is loaded with sugar and sometimes just as much or more sugar than soft drinks..
The small number of vitamins and minerals in no way make up for the added sugar.
After being squeezed the juice is stored in massive oxygen-depleted holding tanks for a year before being packaged and upon packaging flavour packs have to be added to give the juice some form of taste or flavour that has been lost during processing.
To make a comparison a whole fruit orange is packed with nutrients such as Vitamin C, folate, potassium and antioxidants but juice contains no fibre and is loaded with sugar.
Coca Cola 140 calories and 10 teaspoons of sugar
Apple Juice .165 Calories and 9.8 teaspoons of sugar
By eating the whole fruit we consume the fibre which makes us feel fuller, without getting a sugar rush and the liver can easily metabolize the whole fruit.
The liver is the only organ that can metabolize fructose simply, so if the liver gets overloaded with fructose, the extra will be stored as fat causing fat build up and insulin resistance.
A small amount of build up for lean people will not cause too many problems, but if one is already overweight this can lead to further health issues. Apparently fat build up can be created in as little as 10 weeks, not to mention added problems with cholesterol.
In a study, a 16oz glass of grape juiced consumed every day for 3 months caused insulin resistance and a wider waist in overweight individuals and with 2 or more servings per day doubled the risk of gout in some women.
The problem with juice is that we don’t feel as full as when eating the whole fruit therefore we can drink too much and create further obesity.
Most people are eating way too much sugar to begin with therefore it is better to eat wholesome fruits and vegetables and seriously limit fruit juice. Watch that waistline.
